Spleen

Today we had a virtual visit with the radiology team to give recommendations on treatment options for Kendall's spleen. Most of the information below is copied and pasted because there is no way I could put it in my own words. Lol

***This is the diagnosis- splenic lymphatic malformation Abnormalities of lymphatic vessels, sometimes causing cysts filled with lymphatic fluid.

Treatments are:

Embolization: Blocking the abnormal blood vessels with coils or other materials. (They would insert a tiny catheter in her groin and inject the vessels with medication that would slow down/stop the growth. He said this is a great option but could cause an infection or abscess).

Surgery: Removing or reconstructing the malformed vessels.

Medications: Drugs like propranolol may be used to treat certain types of malformations. Steroids are also an option.

***We told the doctor that the heart transplant team wants to wean her off steroids. Giving her more steroids to treat what's going on with the spleen would suppress her immune system even more so they will discuss embolization or surgery with the team.

There is a conference once a month that all specialists meet and discuss patients and decide the plan of care.

From the doctors final notes in the patient portal

PLAN

  1. Present Kendall's case at next available Vascular Anomaly conference.

  2. Return visit after Vascular Anomaly Conference review to go over recommendations.

  3. Referral to Peds Hematology (Dr. McGrath) for discussion regarding systemic treatment options(medications other than steroids).

  4. Referral to Peds Surgery for consideration of resection of splenic lymphatic malformation.
